Each year, for the past 46 years, we keep enough batteries out of landfills to stack up to the height of Mount Everest. We’re taking the next step in raising awareness on the benefits of Eco-Drive technology and its ability to reduce battery waste in landfills by encouraging people to join us on our mission in creating a more sustainable planet.

POWER WITH A PURPOSE
Through a partnership with 1% for the Planet, Citizen has pledged to donate 1% of its website sales in the U.S. to support a host of nonprofit organizations focused on the environment. Created in 2002, 1% for the Planet represents an alliance of businesses and individuals who are committed to enacting change to protect and restore the Earth. By connecting its 3,000-plus members with high-impact nonprofit partners, 1% for the Planet has helped raise more than $265 million to support approved environmental nonprofits around the globe.
The first of Citizen + 1% for the Planet’s nonprofit partners, Everybody Solar, works to protect the environment and strengthen U.S. communities through solar-energy projects. Everybody Solar brings the gift of clean energy to the organizations that need it most: nonprofits serving our most vulnerable populations.

Citizen is joined forces with American Forests, the oldest, national nonprofit conservation organization in the United States. Founded in 1875, American Forests is a pathfinder for creating healthy forests from coast to coast, leading the way for creating healthy and resilient forests, from cities to wilderness, that deliver essential benefits for climate, people, water, and wildlife.
For more than a century, Citizen has created watches while adhering to a simple yet revolutionary challenge: to think about power differently. Imagining how it can help the world, rather than harm it.
All watches require power. But very few consider where that power comes from—and what impact it may have on the world at large. In 1970, in response to an environmental crisis, Citizen pioneered the world’s first light-powered watch. Named Eco-Drive, the technology elevated the high quality of Citizen’s craftsmanship to encompass a new standard. Eco-Drive isn’t an ordinary power source—it’s one with purpose built in, enabling our watches to be powered by any light source, continuously and sustainably, eliminating the need to replace watch batteries. A standard in renewable energy for timepieces, Eco-Drive simultaneously respects and preserves the environment by preventing millions of watch batteries from entering landfills each year.
Environmental Vision 2050
Citizen has implemented global programs to demonstrate its ongoing pledge to support greater environmental responsibility. The Citizen Group Environmental Vision 2050 is a blueprint for realizing a sustainable future: By the year 2050, Citizen plans to achieve CO2 zero-emissions substantively from plants and offices, as well as to keep CO2 emission throughout the value chain to levels that make it possible to constrain global warming.
Sustainable Management Plan
In 2021, Citizen launched its new Sustainable Management Plan. Citizen’s goal is to increase corporate value through expanding business operations while also considering environmental and social issues. In order to become a company close to and loved by citizens the world over, Citizen will continue to create products and services that cater to changes in society and to exercise due care and diligence in its procurement and production processes.
Responsible Jewellery Council
Citizen is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council, the world’s leading standard-setting organization for the global jewelry and watch industry that assists brands on their pathway to sustainable growth. R.J.C. members commit to and are independently audited against the R.J.C. Code of Practices, an international standard on responsible business practices for diamonds, colored gemstones, silver, gold, and platinum group metals. The Code of Practices addresses human rights, labor rights, environmental impact, mining practices, product disclosure, and many more important topics in the jewelry supply chain.
